Pet Vaccines

Canine Influenza continues to be problematic through-out the United States and regional outbreaks continue to occur. Here at Wright Animal Hospital, we offer the canine influenza vaccine to help protect your dog(s). The vaccine will protect your dog(s) from both common strains of canine influenza, H3N2 and H3N8. The vaccine has to be given in a 2 injection initial series with the second injection occurring 2-4 weeks after the initial vaccine.

Once your dog(s) has had the initial series, a booster will be required yearly. Canine Influenza should not be confused with Canine Parainfluenza, known as “Kennel Cough” which is tracheal bronchitis. Vaccination is recommended for healthy dogs 7 weeks of age or older.

Canine influenza, more commonly known as dog flu, has been highlighted in news recently. The H3N2 strain is extremely contagious and symptoms can be severe or even life threatening. H3N8 has similar symptoms, but is typically a milder version. Both can be easily spread by direct contact with an infected dog or via airborne transmission as well as by contact with contaminated objects such as dog bowls, toys, etc.

Both strains of canine influenza may be undetectable for up to 24 days. We strongly encouraged vaccination for all dogs who will participate in boarding, doggie day care, grooming places, dog friendly areas and traveling. It is advised to contact your boarding or doggy day care facilities prior to scheduled participation to find out if it may be required.

Symptoms of the flu:

  • Coughing.
  • Discharge from the nose and/or eye.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Lethargy/lack of energy.
